Notes NOTES: The Zollverein coalmine industrial complex was one of the largest coalmines in the world. Established in the mid 19th century, it became a national monument in 1986 and since 2001 has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Notable features include Shaft 12 and the boiler house, designed by Fritz Schupp and Martin Kremmer in 1927-1932 and considered architecturally spectacular at the time. It was converted into a museum in 2010 by Office for Metropolitan Architecture with HG Merz Architects responsible for the exhibition design.
