NOTES: Robert Cecil (1563-1612), 1st Earl of Salisbury, was responsible for the demolition of most of the Old Palace of Hatfield and the building of the new one, Hatfield House, from 1608 to 1612. His tomb, comprising his effigy carried on a slab by four kneeling Virtues with his cadaver below, was executed by Maxililian Colt in c. 1612. The design of the Chapel, added by the 2nd Earl in 1618, is attributed to Francis Carter who employed Edmund Kinsman as his master mason.
