NOTES: This is one of the largest surviving medieval churches in England. The Benedictine abbey was founded in 1069 and the church was subsequently built by the de Lacy family. A new choir was built around the old one in the late 13th century. The abbey was dissolved in 1539 and the monastic buildings were demolished, but the church was saved to become the parish church. It was extensively restored in 1871 by Sir George Gilbert Scott.
