NOTES: Richelieu was a planned town in the Indre-et-Loire region, designed by Jacques Lemercier for the Cardinal in 1631-1642 in an innovative grid design. The town itself is about 700 metres long by 500 metres wide. It is accessible by three monumental gates, with a fourth dummy gate to complete the symmetry of the whole. The Chateau de Richelieu was largely demolished in the nineteenth century except for some garden buildings and service buildings.
