NOTES: Lutyens returned to Britain from South Africa on the R.M.S. Briton in April 1919 where he met, and enjoyed the company of, Captain Day. When Captain Day remarked that he was soon to retire and wanted to build himself a house in Gravesend, Lutyens spent the journey doing drawings for the house. The designs for the house itself no longer exist but the sketches for the interiors and furniture remain, which Lutyens sent to Captain Day from London. The captain never did build his house.
