NOTES: This cruciform church, one of the largest burgh churches in the Church of Scotland, was built on the site of an older church and consecrated in 1242. It was rebuilt in the mid-15th century following a devastating fire in 1424. By the 19th century the church was in poor physical repair and its Crown Tower had to be dismantled in 1821. Many of its historic features were lost by successive repairs and extensive Victorian restoration. The aluminium crown, designed by Geoffrey Clarke, was controversially installed in 1964.
