NOTES: Sir Charles Barry was the original architect of the square which was completed in 1845. A new layout of the square, which included new inner basins for the fountains in Portland stone, was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens in 1939 for the Ministry of Works, but was only completed in 1948.
