NOTES: Theodore Cornut, a mathematician and military architect born in Avignon, was taken prisoner during a failed assault on Larache and became a slave to the King of Morocco. He was commissioned by Sidi Mohamed ben Abdallah, an Alaouite Sultan, to build the city of Mogador (modern Essaouira) in 1766, for which he ultimately obtained his freedom.
