NOTES: The town hall occupies the centre of the town square. Its tower, erected in 1247, was modified in Renaissance style by the Gdansk architect, Antonius van Opbergen, in the early 17th century. The monument to the astronomer and polymath, Nicolas Copernicus, a native of Torun, was executed in 1853. The tower dates from 1247
