NOTES: This residential garden square was laid out from 1827 by Thomas Cubitt for the Grosvenor family. Prior to World War II, 90 per cent of these houses had been occupied by single families with servants, but after the war only 5 per cent were occupied. In an effort to keep the square residential, the Grosvenor Estate commissioned this conversion plan in 1946. The plan by Raglan Squire of Arcon, executed c.1952, involved the division of the many large town houses into self-contained flats thus providing more affordable housing.
