NOTES: Work on the reconstruction of the house by James Wyatt II, begun around 1806, was incomplete when the 3rd Duke of Portland died in 1809 and his successor sold the house to the Duke of Somerset. Several architects presented plans for completing the house at this time, but nothing was done. The house was entirely rebuilt in the 1860s to designs by Benjamin Ferrey.
