NOTES: The architect and builder James Burton began developing the resort of St Leonards on Sea in 1828 on land he owned. Victoria House at 57 Marina (number 2 on the print) was the first building put up and served as Burton's residence until he completed Allegria (number 7), overlooking what is now St Leonards Gardens. His son, Decimus, continued the development of the new town after his father's death in 1837.
