NOTES: James Burton, architect and builder, bought land to create a seaside resort near Hastings and began planning it in 1826. Following his death his son, the architect Decimus Burton, continued the development. This print was prepared as one of the lithographs in the work Views at St. Leonards, near Hastings : first stone laid March 1st 1828 (St Leonards, 183-?). Some of the prints in that work are dated 1829 but thework was probably published in the early 1830s. Two of these buildings can be identified on a keyed view of St Leonards on Sea, see RIBA85138.
