NOTES: The palazzo is also identified here as 'Palazzo C'. The villa, built in the second half of the 16th century, was remodelled for the wedding of Giovanni Battista Spinola (1625). The drawing is one of a series executed in an unidentified Italian hand, collected by Peter Paul Rubens and published in engraved form in his book 'I Palazzi di Genova' (Antwerp, 1622). The publication was divided into two parts: 'Palazzi Antichi' (where this particular image appears as Fig. 14) and 'Palazzi Moderni'. Subsequent additions appeared in 1652 and 1663 and the book was Rubens' only work on pure architecture.
