NOTES The museum is housed in a former female prison built in 1780-1783 under the direction of John Carr but to designs by the builders Messrs. Wilkinson & Prince of York. It was founded in 1938 by Dr John L. Kirk, who amassed most of the MuseumÔÇÖs collections, and John Bowes Morrell, a leading York City Councillor. Kirk created a series of period rooms from his collections and the freplace and its setting is probably one of these displays.
