NOTES: This drawing was made for engraving by Colen Campbell for inclusion in his Vitruvius Britannicus (London, 1717), Vol. II, pl. 28. See RIBA32905 for the engraving made from this drawing. This gateway, constructed in Portland stone, originally gave access to The Thames from the gardens of York House, the London mansion of the 1st Duke of Buckingham. Campbell here attributes its design to Inigo Jones but it is almost certainly by Sir Balthazar Gerbier (although the executant mason Nicholas Stone has sometimes been credited as its designer).
