NOTES: This Italianate gateway, constructed in Portland stone, originally gave access to the Thames from the gardens of York House, the London mansion of the 1st Duke of Buckingham. It is now marooned 137 metres from the river, within the Victoria Embankment Gardens, due to the construction of the Thames Embankment in 1865. The York Water Gate has been attributed to Inigo Jones, Balthazar Gerbier or Nicholas Stone.
