NOTES: The house was designed for Sir Walter Cope in the early 17th century and was completed and added to by his son-in-law, Henry Rich, Earl of Holland. It was badly damaged in World War II and was largely demolished, leaving a shell and the surviving east wing. This was rebuilt as a youth hostel to the designs of Casson and Conder in 1957-1959.
