Half term activities at RIBA

Half term activities for children and young people

09 January 2019

This February half term, design mobile architecture that can move across land, air or water, build a life-size structure that brings people together or create a model house that shows how we might live in the future in our creative workshops for children and young people. Inspired by the RIBA’s world class architectural collection and our exhibition programme, participants will learn what an architectural project entails, as well as gaining hands-on practical experience.

Our workshops take place between 18 to 21 February and are led by teaching architects and artists who will help your child learn important design and making skills through creative, hands-on activities.

Design Quest: architecture workshops for children aged 6 to 10 years

Design Quest: Wings, Wheels or Water?
Thursday 21 February 2019, 11am to 4pm
How can architecture play a part in aiding the movement of people? Using the RIBA’s collections, discover different kinds of buildings that move before taking up the challenge to create your own structure that can move over air, land or water.

Design Quest: Making A Community
Friday 22 February 2019, 11am to 4pm
How can architecture bring people together? Working in small groups, explore the different ways in which people interact, then design a structure that facilitates this. By the end of the workshop you will have constructed life-sized models that show how your structure works in practice.

Design Day: architecture workshops for children aged 11 to 15 years

Design Day: The Grass is Always Greener...
Wednesday 20 February 2019, 11am to 4pm
Can architectural structures and the natural landscape become one harmonious form? Explore how location, form and materials can make a building more sustainable then design and build your own model structure to make the next generation proud.

Design Day: Where Will We Live?
Thursday 21 February 2019, 11am to 4pm
Consider how the needs of people change over time and where we might live in the future. Using paper engineering and pop-up design techniques, create a 3D cross-section of a model house that shows how it has been adapted to accommodate the future needs of its inhabitants.

Skill Up: architecture workshops for children aged 15 to 18 years

Skill Up: Flexible Spaces - Building With and For the Community
Monday 18 to Wednesday 20 February 2019, 11am to 4pm daily
Over three days, you will learn what an architectural project entails including aims, budgets, processes and materials as well as gaining hands-on practical experience. Starting with a visit to a local community project, you will develop photography skills, create architectural drawings and construct 3D models that demonstrate your proposal for a flexible space with community purpose.

Skill Up: Flat Pack Architecture
Friday 22 February 2019, 11am to 4pm
Explore how mobile architecture can provide an alternative way for people to live before digitally designing a proposal for a flexible flat pack building. You will then take on the challenge of building a life-size model to demonstrate how your building pops up and packs away.

Online booking in advance is essential. To book onto any of the workshops, please follow the Buy Tickets link on the event's web page.
