Richard L. Miller, FAIA, was named by Healthcare Design magazine as one of the nation's twenty-five most influential people in healthcare design and given the lifetime achievement award as a Health Care Hero by the Nashville Business Journal. He has served on the AIA Committee for Architecture and Healthcare and is a member of the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE), the Nashville Health Care Council, the Nashville Hospitality House Board, and the National Council of Architectural Registration Board. Widely recognized as an expert in healthcare design, he has spoken on topics ranging from utilization of the team approach in building a children's hospital to the expectations of the hospital of the future at such venues as the Symposium on Healthcare Design and the IFMA World Workplace. Miller is president of Earl Swensson Associates (ESa). Earl S. Swensson, FAIA, is founder of ESa, one of the country's most successful and notable healthcare architectural firms, and is internationally celebrated for pioneering innovative design concepts in the healthcare and elderly care field, some of which have been patented. Known especially for advocating a design philosophy that incorporates human-centered design, state-of-the-art engineering, and sound economics to create an environment meeting the physical and emotional needs of its users. Swensson has written about his philosophy in A Passion for Design: Human-Centered Architecture and Synergenial Practice and taught and lectured widely on the future of architecture and healthcare facility design. J. Todd Robinson AIA, EDAC, is a senior designer and principal at ESa specializing in healthcare facilities. He has been in charge of the design and project management of hundreds of new, renovated, and expanded medical facilities throughout the United States, including rural and regional hospitals, medical centers, critical access hospitals, specialty centers, medical office buildings, and outpatient surgery and diagnostic centers. A participant in the Evidence Based Design Accreditation and Certification program at the Center for Health Design, Robinson is also a charter member of Planetree's Design Advisory Council.
