As part of the project Urbane Kunste Ruhr (Ruhr Urban Arts), four teams at the Zurich University of the Arts (ZHdK) conducted a lab in Mulheim, Germany in 2013. Using artistic and cultural sciences methods, various layers of the town on the Ruhr were exposed, studied, and made visible and audible. The dance initiatives of local youths with an African migration background, as well as the discourses about creative city and creative class, play a role in the illumination of the problems and also the potential of the town of Mulheim. Apart from visual and performative approaches, the town was also listened to intently. Acoustic atmospheres, as well as visitors to the centrally located Forum shopping center, provide insights into the changes and difficulties experienced by the town and its inhabitants. The presentations of the four projects are supplemented by contributions by various guest authors, who provide insights into the political and urban development situation of the Ruhr area, as well as into related questions about the role of the arts in urban transformation processes. The publication is accompanied by a website with acoustic and filmic material.
