Course content and structure
The course is divided into two halves. The morning sessions provide a general overview which would be suitable for those who would like a recap after a career break, EU architects new to practicing in the UK, and newly qualified architects in need of further clarification on these topics.
The afternoon sessions will provide more in depth and advanced information for those wishing to increase their knowledge on Building Regs and Planning issues.
The two sessions cover the following:
Morning Session 1: General Overview: Building Regulations (9:45am to 11:15am)
The structure of Building Regulations will be explained, including the links to planning and British Standards and the process of how requirements link together. The session will explain the principles applicable to different types of building projects, and set out differences between new build developments and works to existing buildings.
Morning Session 2: General Overview: Planning Processes (11:30am to 1pm)
This session will provide an introduction to the UK Planning system, detailing legal framework, the role of local authorities and planning procedures. The seminar will also cover the processes for making a planning application
Afternoon Session 1: Advanced Building Regulations (1:45pm to 3:15pm)
There are a number of more complex Building Regulations requirements and this session will focus on these, which include key principles of fire safety, access, and thermal insulation provision. Session focusses on issues every architect should be aware of and need specialist involvement early on when feasibility designs are being considered.
Afternoon Session 2: Advanced Planning (3.30pm to 5pm)
The types of planning appeal, appeal procedure and timelines will be explained, along with information on appeal decisions and inquiries. This seminar will also discuss planning issues in London specifically, ranging from the current London plan and supplementary planning guidance.
Planning: DLP Planning Ltd.
Neil Osborn is a senior director at DLP Planning Ltd. Following a period in local government and a partnership in a national planning consultancy he co-founded Development Land and Planning Consultants, based in Bedford, in 1992. The practice was subsequently renamed DLP Planning Ltd. and is a part of the DLP Consulting Group a multi-disciplinary consultancy with offices in ten locations across England and Wales.
His clients are wide ranging and diverse, including national and regional house builders, commercial, retail and leisure developers, renewable and low carbon energy promotors and a variety of other development interests, land owners and investors ranging from publically quoted businesses to private investors.
Emma Beardmore joined DLP Planning Ltd in 2017, as the director of the London office, having worked for St James (part of the Berkeley Group) as part of a team delivering a 25 year regeneration project. Emma graduated from Newcastle University in 2000 and has been a member of the Royal Town Planning Institute since 2002.
Prior to joining the Berkeley Group, Emma worked as consultant for 14 years in leading London consultancy firms advising clients on a range of projects across London, the South East and Wales. Emma has led a number of multi-disciplinary project teams to achieve planning success and delivery on site, advising on strategy, programme and the preparation of complex planning applications.
Building Regulations: Blatchford Brown Ltd.
Colin Blatchford Brown has been in the building control profession for nearly thirty years, both in the public and private sectors. He understands and appreciates the increasing complexity of Building Regulations’ requirements and the potential conflicts they create within building design.
Colin has worked on a wide variety of projects and is currently involved in large scale projects in London together with the Hinkley Point C nuclear power station. Presenting regularly to the industry, he is keen to share his knowledge on practical application of the Building Regulations, breaking down the ever more detailed Approved Documents into easily applied principles, to make architectural design more straightforward.

- An email will be sent to confirm your place after you have made your booking via Eventbrite links or other methods. A second email confirming venue along with map/directions will be sent to you approximately 7 to 10 days before the event.
- Bookings at the member rates will only be accepted if accompanied by a valid membership number.
- If you require a purchase order to be quoted on your invoice this must be supplied at the time of booking.
- A photographer may cover this event and the photographs may be used to publicise future RIBA events.
