​Do you have a passion for conservation architecture? Do you want to develop specialist knowledge, skills and connections in the field? Are you interested in taking a route onto the RIBA Conservation register?

The RIBA Conservation Course is an important step on the ladder towards a specialism in conservation.

It will provide you with a framework of knowledge and understanding to support your decision making process on projects and enable you to apply for recognition of your skills within the RIBA and other Conservation Accreditation Schemes.

Who is the course for?

The course is aimed at architects and other construction professionals who:

  • wish to develop their specialism in conservation architecture
  • want to develop practical knowledge and skills in conservation
  • wish to refresh their knowledge or formalise learning from experience in the field
  • need to provide evidence to support their application onto the RIBA Conservation Register and other accreditation schemes.

Course content and structure

Course content and structure This four day course addresses the philosophical and practical requirements associated with the responsibility of working on a historic building. Attending the course will help you develop critical awareness and knowledge of conservation work and be of direct practical application. It is structured as a four day intensive course comprising three workshop based days and a practical application day.

· Day 2 Practical conservation

· Day 3 Operational conservation

· Day 4 Site visits and the RIBA accreditation application process

Course Leader

Keith Knight BAHons DipArch(Shef) MA(York) IHBC RIBA SCA is an RIBA Accredited Specialist Conservation Architect with over 30 years’ experience in the private, public and voluntary sectors. This includes appointments as Building Conservation Officer at a National Park and a London Borough and English Heritage where he was Historic Buildings Architect.

He has served on the Heritage Lottery Fund’s Panel of Expert Advisors, the Yorkshire Design Review Panel and the Council of the IHBC . He has set up several buildings preservation trusts and was Director of the South Yorkshire Buildings Preservation Trust, with a brief to bring 'buildings at risk' back into beneficial use.

He sits on the national Casework Panel for Council for British Archaeology, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Middlesbrough Historic Churches Committee and is an assessor for the Civic Trust Awards. His consultancy work ranges from large mixed use master planning schemes to one off listed buildings. Major projects include the Isis Waterside Regeneration and Yorkshire Forward £45m Tower Works development in Leeds. On its formation he was appointed as an assessor for the RIBA register of Conservation architect. He is director of Dean Knight Partnership in York.

The four day intensive course includes practical site visit, refreshments, lunch, learning materials and RIBA Conservation Course Certificate.

* RIBA Advanced CPD refers to specialisms or demonstrable expertise which an architect could use to market to clients or employers, as career development, or to be named on a specialist list.
