The RIBA Contracts CPD Day is broken down into two sessions. The morning session will focus on the importance of using the appropriate form of appointment document and the content of the new suite of RIBA Professional Services Contracts. The afternoon session will focus on the various building contract procurement methods and the new 2018 edition of the RIBA Building Contracts.

Morning session: choosing the appropriate form of appointment (10am – 1pm)

  • Overview of the various procurement methods – traditional, design and build, management, partnering and multi-party agreements
  • Legislation affecting procurement and contracts, and the implications on the role of the architect/consultant, including areas of risk
  • Why use a professional services contract?
  • What to consider when choosing a professional services contract
  • Summary of the new RIBA Professional Services Contracts - What are the key changes / Overview of the key contract terms
  • Workshop on the RIBA PSCs: managing liability and risk
  • Overview of the new CIC Collateral Warranties and Novation Agreements

Afternoon session: choosing the appropriate building contract (2pm – 5pm)

  • What are the various standard forms of contracts available and when are they applicable
  • Summary of the new RIBA Building Contracts -What are the key changes / Overview of the contract terms, focusing on risk and liability
  • Working on the RIBA Building Contracts: key contract administrator duties
  • Comparison between the RIBA Building Contracts and other forms of building contracts

Speaker

Sarah Lupton, Lupton Stellakis
Professor Sarah Lupton is a partner in Lupton Stellakis and directs the Master of Design Administration and the Diploma in Professional Practice at the Welsh School of Architecture. She is dual qualified as an architect and as a lawyer. She lectures widely on subjects relating to construction law and is the author of many books including a series on JCT contracts (4th editions 2017), the Guide to the RIBA Domestic and Concise Building Contracts, Which Contract? (new edition forthcoming in 2018)and the 5th edition of Cornes and Lupton’s Design Liability in the Construction Industry. Sarah contributes regularly to the International Construction Law Review, acts as an arbitrator, adjudicator and expert witness inconstruction disputes and is also chair of the CIC’s Liability Panel and the CIC LiabilityChampion.
