Residential Conservation Course - Chester

The RIBA Residential Conservation Course provides you with the opportunity to attend both the RIBA Conservation Course and RIBA Advanced Conservation Course in six consecutive days, including accommodation and meals, with the option of choosing to attend only one of the courses. The residential offer includes meals, refreshments and accommodation throughout the six days. However, you can also choose to attend either or both courses at day delegate rates.

The two courses are important steps on the ladder towards a specialism in conservation.

The RIBA Conservation Course will provide you with a framework of knowledge an understanding to support your decision making process on projects and enable you to apply for recognition of your skills within the RIBA and other Conservation Accreditation Schemes. Whilst attending the RIBA Advanced Conservation Course will help you develop critical awareness and knowledge of architectural conservation procedures in order to apply theory in to practice, as well as detailed analysis of structure, construction and services during the Technical Design stage.

RIBA Conservation Course

The course is aimed at architects and all other construction professionals who:

  • wish to develop their specialism in conservation architecture
  • want to develop practical knowledge and skills in conservation
  • wish to refresh their knowledge or formalise learning from experience in the field
  • need to provide evidence to support their application onto the RIBA Conservation Register and other accreditation schemes.

This four day course addresses the philosophical and practical requirements associated with the responsibility of working on a historic building. Attending the course will help you develop critical awareness and knowledge of conservation work and be of direct practical application. It is structured as a four day intensive course comprising three workshop based days and a practical application day.

  • Day 1 Philosophy and ethics
  • Day 2 Practical conservation
  • Day 3 Operational conservation
  • Day 4 Site visits and the RIBA accreditation application process

RIBA Advanced Conservation Course

The course is aimed at architects and other built environment professionals who have attended the RIBA four day conservation course or other conservation courses, and wish to progress their specialism in conservation and who:

  • wish to progress their knowledge in conservation architecture
  • want to further their practical knowledge and skills in conservation
  • wish to refresh their knowledge or formalise learning from experience in the field
  • need to build up a portfolio of evidence to support applications to RIBA and other conservation accreditation schemes.

Structured as an intensive two day course comprising presentations, workshops and case studies the programme includes:

  • Day 1 Conservation Procedures
  • Day 2 Structure, Construction & Services

Course leader

Janie Price: Kennedy O’Callaghan Architects.
Janie has a diploma in conservation from the AA and is accredited as SCA and AABC. Her work includes conservation architect for Bletchley Park and the Antarctic Heritage Trust.

She is experienced in a wide variety of conservation work at all work stages, from medieval farmhouses to palaces and design guidance in conservation areas. She was co-speaker on the RIBA Conservation Course in 2017 and is an assessor for the conservation register for the RIBA and CARE.

Days 1 to 3 will be delivered by Janie, with a co-speaker and guest speakers where indicated. Speakers may vary from course to course to suit availability and location, however, the course content will remain consistent.

Throughout the two courses, Janie will be joined by co-speakers.

Day delegate fees include two, four or six day courses, including practical site visit (Module 4 only), workshops, refreshments, lunch, learning materials and RIBA Conservation Course Certificate(s). In addition to above, residential fee also includes breakfast, dinner and accommodation throughout your chosen course. Accommodation for the night before, or the last day of the course can be arranged, however is not included in the course fee.
