RIBA + VitrA Talk: Feilden Fowles at Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Following the opening of The Weston at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, hear architects Fergus Feilden and Edmund Fowles in conversation with Clare Lilley, the Director of Programme at YSP.

The Weston at Yorkshire Sculpture Park is a new visitor centre which opens to the public on 30 March 2019 - join the architects for the first talk about this new building. Shortlisted for the 2019 RIBA Yorkshire Awards, the building is constructed from layered pigmented concrete, evoking the strata of sandstone bedrock. Built on a historic quarry site within the 18th-century Bretton Estate, the building emerges from the ground and forms a sheltered, sunken terrace with views across the Park. Designed by Feilden Fowles, co-directors Fergus Feilden and Edmund Fowles will discuss the new project in conversation with Clare Lilley, the Director of Programme at YSP.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park is an award-winning museum for modern and contemporary sculpture, presenting work by some of the world’s most extraordinary artists. Clare Lilley recently curated exhibitions featuring Ai Weiwei, Fiona Banner, Amar Kanwar, KAWS, Alfredo Jaar, Shirin Neshat, Giuseppe Penone, Sean Scully, Yinka Shonibare MBE, James Turrell, Not Vital and Bill Viola. She is curator of Frieze Sculpture, London (2012-19).

Fergus Feilden and Edmund Fowles founded Feilden Fowles in 2010 following studies at the University of Cambridge, the Royal College of Art and the Architectural Association. All of the practice’s projects are led by a strong sense of place-making, social values and rich materiality. Among the practice’s many accolades are RIBA, Civic Trust and Wood Awards, along with being named BD Young Architect of the Year 2016. They have taught and lectured widely: Edmund Fowles led a design studio at the Sir John CASS School of Art, Architecture and Design and Fergus is a visiting critic and lecturer at University of Bath.

The evening will begin with a drinks reception at 6.30pm, kindly supported by VitrA Bathrooms. The talk will begin at 7pm in the main visitor centre. Please note that the event will take place in the main visitor centre and not at The Weston.
