RIBA East Great British Buildings Tour - The Dorothy Garrod Building, Newnham College, Cambridge

Walters & Cohen Architects have created an inspirational building, both practical and elegant, drawing inspiration from and resonating with its century-old neighbouring buildings. This scheme is winner of an RIBA East Regional Award, RIBA East Building of the Year Award and an RIBA National Award 2019.

"The profound and multiple connections between the past and the future are very carefully conceived and highly impressive": RIBA Award Jury

As part of this series of events showcasing 2019's RIBA Award winners, Walters & Cohen Architects are giving a talk and tour of The Dorothy Garrod Building, Newnham College.

The architects were asked to reflect on the overall layout and planning of the college grounds, their analysis of the site led them to question the initial brief, and to look at an alternative location for the new building.

The new building now adds an element that completes the college’s enclosure. Creating a new spine through the college, starting with a delightful, small enclosed garden space at the interface, there is also a strong visual connection to the new main courtyard at the junction with the existing college buildings which facilitates the integration of new and old.

The development provides student rooms, teaching spaces, a café and a rooftop gym, giving memorable views across the college buildings and grounds.

This event is part of our Great British Buildings series of talks and tours around the country.
