Arrol & Snell Limited were commissioned by Lincolnshire County Council to produce designs for a new Heritage Skills Centre training students in stonemasonry, stone glass lime technology and other traditional building skills. The scheme was developed in conjunction with the Lincoln Cathedral and Lincoln College. Careful consideration was given to produce a contemporary building that sat unobtrusively within the Castle grounds, a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Extensive negotiations were carried out between the Local Authority and English Heritage. Planning Permission and Schedule Monument Consent was obtained in the summer of 2011. Materials were carefully selected in order to reflect the vernacular architecture of the Castle and a turf roof was designed to allow the building to blend in to the landscape of the Castle Bailey. The building has been designed to be highly sustainable and is currently nearing completion.
