Scampston is graced by one of the largest walled gardens in England, within an estate and park planned by Capability Brown. At the centre of the garden is a substantial range of greenhouses, which were saved from dereliction in the late 20th Century. The replanting of the walled garden was the idea of Lady Caroline Legard, who created a new modern garden designed by Piet Oudolf. The initial design proposal for the new Visitor's Centre by Caroe and Partners, was to provide a new structure, essential for the presentation of the Estate to the public, particularly the new walled garden. This design was taken through detailed design by Bramhall Blenkharn. In overall design terms and in function, the new building was intended as a modern 21st Century orangery to grace and complement the new gardens and for the enjoyment of visitors in addition to providing essential facilities.
