Carve Architecture , 14 Clifford Street , YORK , YO1 9RD

The property was a 3 storey 3 bedroom mid-terrace 19th Century dwelling. The brief was to create an open plan family-friendly space, and to add a 4th bedroom. Storage inside and out was also essential. In terms of space planning, the design solution was relatively simple. The challenge was in tying the parts together in a legible manner that creates a solution that is not several disparate pieces. The concept was to create a series of nested cuboid forms, which used a small complimentary palette of materials and the same typical vocabulary of detail. The wildflower green roofs, increase the bio-diversity of this small urban garden. The storage solutions created two of the more interesting aspects of the design, and also reinforced the striking contemporary massing. Internally, the extension brings a contemporary feel to this part of the house, mediating between it and the original house. Natural light floods the Kitchen extension from large glass double doors and Kitchen window, together with two flat roof windows.
