Whilst chatting over the fence in their back gardens one day, the owners of neighbouring terraced houses learned of each other’s intention to build extensions to their respective homes. Rather than risk the extensions clashing in style, or compromising the other’s amenity, the neighbours took the decision to undertake a joint design and approached Hamer Way. The clients had similar principles in mind for their extensions. Not only did they share a preference for pitched roof forms, to create maximum internal height and bring light inventively into space, they both also love timber cladding. This allowed us to create a composition of 2 individually bespoke extensions that have their own distinct character but that sit harmoniously and respectfully together. Despite the country being placed on lockdown in May, we are proud to have progressed all design work through to submission of a full planning application, entirely remotely. Conducting client meetings via Zoom call, we used 3D computer modelling to walk the neighbours virtually through their new spaces. Planning permission was obtained without complication and the projects are due to start on site in early 2021.
