The first of five sites for developed under a new initiative to improve mental health in Merseyside, Clock View provides much needed and improved mental healthcare provision in north LiverpooI. The Hospital signals investment and directly contributes to the general regeneration of the area, whilst representing the Trust’s newfound commitment to mental health. The site takes advantage of local transport links and an established healthcare location that is close to residents, facilitating discharge and integrated care. The front entrance is lantern shaped, transparent and lights up at night, providing a warm welcome to visitors and fostering pride among the staff, patients and the local community. This pride also helps to counteract the stigma often associated with mental health hospitals. Elements of the demolished hospital that existed in its place were salvaged to create landscape features, while the use of splayed windows ensures a long view of the landscape is provided to every patient. The modernised facilities provide 80 inpatient beds for Adult and Older People Acute Mental Health and Dementia Services, each with their own private bedroom and an ensuite. It also ensures the city’s new psychiatric intensive care unit is easily accessible to those most in distress and in need of urgent inpatient care. The pavilion type building layout supports the need for future flexibility, and addresses the desire to create a warm and friendly domestic building in a landscaped setting. This offers numerous advantages including the creation of a semi-private and a private/secure open space, at a domestic scale which aids integration with neighbouring residential developments. This provides plenty of idyllic views and access to landscaped ecological gardens, with individual characters for each ward block. It was given the Breaam rating of ‘Excellent,’ an achievement bestowed upon only the most exceptional hospitals.
