What is the Royal Gold Medal?

The Royal Gold Medal was established in the mid-nineteenth century by RIBA’s first President, Earl de Grey. It is given annually by RIBA on behalf of the Monarch of the UK. The recipient or recipients receive the medal in recognition of a lifetime’s achievement and body of work.

The original and formal condition of the honour is: “The Royal Gold Medal for the promotion of architecture, instituted by Queen Victoria in 1848, is conferred annually by the Sovereign on some distinguished architect or group of architects for work of high merit, or on some distinguished person or group whose work has promoted, either directly or indirectly, the advancement of architecture.”
