Toyota New HQ Building

Toyota HQ Ltd wanted a high quality design to reflect and enhance the company image and provide an attractive and efficient working environment that would be lively and stimulating.

Invited Civic and Commercial

Sheppard Robson were selected as winners of the competition for a new 13,000m2 building that was launched in April 1997.

The brief asked for modern office accommodation that would allow interaction between the various staff groups, and respond to the parkland setting. The competition involved interviews, presentations and visits to the architects’ completed buildings.

Commenting on the process Andrew Singer, Toyota’s Finance and Systems Director said:

“At the beginning of the process I was concerned that running a competition would be slow, bureaucratic and unlikely to add much to the process. On all these items I have been proved wrong. The participation of the RIBA in the process has enabled the Directors of TGB to make an informed choice from a number of different options and to focus clearly on what it is they are looking for. From the point of view of representing the architectural profession, I feel that the RIBA has added real value for its members by executing the competition in a highly professional way”.
