Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety: RIBA response to Terms of Reference

Chair of the RIBA’s Expert Advisory Group on Grenfell, Jane Duncan, responds to the publication of Terms of Reference

07 September 2017

RIBA Immediate Past President and Chair of the RIBA’s Expert Advisory Group on Grenfell, Jane Duncan said:

“The RIBA welcomes the publication of the Terms of Reference for the Independent Review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety. It is essential that the outcome of the review is a robust and fit-for-purpose regulatory regime that ensures that buildings are safe in the long term. It is proper that the Review is broad in scope, and covers issues such as the coherence of the current regulatory regime and the balance of responsibilities of key individuals within the system. We strongly believe that the Independent Review should make recommendations on the full range of issues relating to building regulations and fire safety, including but extending beyond multi-occupancy high-rise residential buildings. A comprehensive reappraisal of Approved Document B is needed, not just amendments and clarifications.”
