RIBA President, Simon Allford, said:

“My thoughts are with the family, friends and all those who met and worked with Oriol Bohigas at this time, who passed away at the grand age of 96 on 30 November 2021.

Oriol was an extraordinary architect and urban planner who, in his practice Martorell Bohigas Mackay, was instrumental in the transformation of Barcelona – a project which resulted in the City receiving the Royal Gold Medal in 1999. He also engaged in projects around the world and was a great friend to architecture and architects.

As Ricky Burdett, Professor of the LSE and Founding Director of the Architecture Foundation noted in his obituary, ‘As head of the city’s urban planning department and masterplanner of the successful 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, which inspired London’s 2012 Olympics, Oriol Bohigas represented the urban soul of the city of Barcelona for over sixty years.’”
