RIBA welcomes Government plans to measure actual energy use, but questions scope

Our initial response to the Government's consultation on proposals to improve the energy and carbon performance of commercial and industrial buildings.

17 March 2021

The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has welcomed the Government’s consultation on proposals to improve the energy and carbon performance of commercial and industrial buildings in England and Wales.

RIBA President, Alan Jones, said:

“The RIBA has long called for performance-based ratings for buildings, so I strongly welcome this move towards measuring actual energy use.

But by only applying to large scale commercial and industrial developments, today’s proposals have unnecessary limitations. To ensure all buildings are fit for the future, the Government must look to extend the scope of this critical requirement.”

The RIBA will submit and publish a full response to the consultation shortly.
