In response, Adrian Dobson, RIBA Director of Professional Services says,
“MPs have recognised that there is a critical need for further action now to ensure that buildings are safe, beyond the Hackitt Review recommendations. This includes backing the RIBA’s call for an immediate ban on the use of combustible materials in the external walls of high-rise buildings and promoting the more widespread use of sprinkler systems.
The Government indicates that they may look at some of these recommendations in a further technical review of Approved Document B, something the RIBA has consistently called for. However, if they are serious about creating a better, clearer system for fire safety, it is critical that this does not mean yet another cycle of prolonged evidence gathering which only ends in maintaining the status quo. The public need swift action to improve the safety of buildings across the country.”
