Architects are the single largest customer group of the Planning Portal, using the online service every day to submit planning and building control applications on behalf of clients and to access trusted, accurate and authoritative content about the planning and building system.

The partnership highlights the central role of architects in the planning process. It will evolve over time but establishes a fundamental link between the services of architects and the online services provided by the Planning Portal.

The Planning Portal was launched in 2002 with the aim to simplify the planning and building control sector. Owned by PortalPlanQuest, it is a joint venture between the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and TerraQuest Ltd. It successfully processes around 90 per cent of all planning applications throughout England and Wales - approximately 2,200 daily.

Philip Waddy, Chair of the RIBA Planning Group commented:

"The Planning Portal has transformed the way in which architects interact with the planning system. Digital technology has yet more to offer and as leaders in the creation of the built environment RIBA members should welcome this joint commitment."

As of today, the RIBA is listed as a strategic partner on the Planning Portal.
