RIBA student Council representatives have been working with young people across the Commonwealth on a manifesto aimed at making human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable which will be launched at RIBA on Tuesday 17 April 2018.

The Commonwealth Summit and Youth Forum

From 16 to 19 April 2018, the meeting of Commonwealth Heads of Government (CHOGM) takes place in London. The Commonwealth summit’s theme is: ‘Towards a common future’. Through its forums and themes, the summit can help to influence countries like our own, small island nations, countries with rapid urbanisation and acute environmental issues.

The Commonwealth Youth Forum also takes place at the summit, providing the opportunity for debating and networking in respect of the challenges facing young people across the built environment.

Youth Manifesto - Powering our Common Future: Urbanism in the Commonwealth

This year the Commonwealth Association of Planners Young Planners (CAP YP) and the Commonwealth Association of Architects Young Architects (CAA YA) have come together and have developed a manifesto (supported by a full compendium) to illustrate how young planners and architects can influence urbanism and sustainability.

CAP YP and CAA YP asked all Young Planners and Architects “How can Young People within the Commonwealth help deliver SDG 11 to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable?”

Passionate responses came from: Australia, The Caribbean, Malaysia, Nigeria, India and South Africa. This diverse input from across the globe is represented in the manifesto, which aims to send a strong message to Heads of Government about the importance of sharing best practice, having a vision for how young people can influence their society and profession and ensuring a holistic approach to developing our future environment in a sustainable and collaborative manner.
