Small shifts, big future: Designing Cardiff for tomorrow
In a quickly and ever evolving world, the focus on people should be the focus of architecture and masterplanning. This competition invited the future designers of our built environment to propose innovative small-scale interventions that can create significant positive impact on Cardiff and its inhabitants.
The proposal should align with the core values of the Wellbeing of Future Generations (Wales) Act, with a focus on social equity, sustainability, and long-term resilience.
Young designers in practices belonging to the RSAW Large Practice Network were tasked with identifying and designing small, yet impactful changes in Cardiff’s public spaces, infrastructure, or community facilities. The interventions should address current urban challenges while enhancing social value, promoting well-being, and contributing to a sustainable future.
The four entries were displayed as an exhibition in Cardiff's St David's centre during the RSAW Design Week. The public were able to read each practices' proposal and vote for there winner by scanning a barcode and 'liking' their choice on the RSAW Instagram page (@the_rsaw).
In addition to a public vote, we also had a jury vote by Simon Gilbert, Head of Planning at Cardiff Council, Juliet Davis, Head of School at the Welsh School of Architecture, and Elinor Weekley, Director at RSAW.
The jury and public vote was synonymous and we are pleased to announce the winner of the 'Small shifts, big future: Designing Cardiff for tomorrow' is AtkinsRéalis.

Thank you to each practice that took the time to submit an entry. Take a look at the proposals here:
