A Guide to Managing Safety-Critical Elements in Building Construction

A short and practical guide on managing the design and installation of safety-critical elements in buildings with increased independent inspection and evidence of compliance.

This new guide, developed in partnership with the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), sets out a more rigorous and structured approach to the design, construction, and inspection of elements identified as potentially ‘safety-critical’ with examples of how to document evidence of compliance.

Safety-critical elements are those which if they fail, are omitted, or incorrectly installed, carry an unacceptable risk of causing serious injury or fatality.

It includes a recommended set of actions that are mapped to the RIBA Plan of Work, a worked example to illustrate a typical scenario, indicating where the impact on safety-critical elements would need to be considered, and some examples of good practice that exist in the industry already.
