Accessible architecture in practice

As part of National Inclusion Week 2025, this site tour of Phoenix Arts Centre Leicester will explore the triumphs and challenges of extending and reorganising an independent arts venue in an accessible and welcoming way, to ensure a sustainable future for the organisation.

Explore Phoenix Arts Centre with the people who made it into the welcoming and accessible space Leicester loves. The Phoenix Arts Centre won the ProCon 2024 award for Medium to large non-residential scheme of the year, and this is your chance to see the detail behind its excellence.

Joshua von Fragstein from Nottingham chartered practice Marchini Curran Associates will host a building tour, which will be followed by a panel discussion chaired by our Professional knowledge manager, Paul Hirons, and featuring:

  • Ros Hill, Phoenix Cinema and Art Centre CEO
  • ALL-In Leicester
  • Emily Jeffers, Equality inclusivity and diversity lead, RIBA.

Who is this event designed for?

Local architects who would like to learn more about using the Inclusive Design Overlay and the general principles of working collaboratively with end users to properly design truly accessible and welcoming spaces.

Members of the public who would like to find out how architects use their specialised skills to make sure everyone can enjoy cultural spaces to the full.

Other local construction professionals who would like to meet and mingle with inspiring designers, and expand their understanding of great architecture.

The principles included in our Inclusive Design Overlay make it well placed as a resource for all built environment professionals. We are confident this will become a valuable industry document to support better long-term inclusion and access outcomes for everyone involved in the procurement, design, management, maintenance and use of the built environment.

Film lovers can even follow the tour and talk with a screening of Fighters which is being screened to tie in with the inclusive subject matter being addressed.

The Phoenix restaurant will be open for dinner before or after the event, so you can enjoy the facilities at your leisure.
