Designed in the 1960s to offer radical solutions to housing needs, the Balfron Tower (Erno Goldfinger) and the Robin Hood Gardens Estate (Alison and Peter Smithson) are two of the best known examples of Brutalism in east London.
The two estates are now in very different states, with the Balfron Tower newly refurbished, and the Robin Hood Gardens Estate undergoing demolition.
As both are within easy walking distance of each other, this tour will reflect on the utopian ambitions behind these great social housing projects, and question what aspects of their pasts might have led to such diverging futures.
