Cultured Cousins – The Work of Three Irish Architects: Yvonne Farrell and Shelly McNamara – Grafton Architects

Join the Shropshire Society of Architects for the second lecture in their fantastic Autumn 2025 Series: Cultured Cousins – The Work of Three Irish Architects. This next instalment features none other than Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara — the visionary duo behind the world-renowned Grafton Architects!

Join the Shropshire Society of Architects for the second lecture in their Autumn 2025 Series, proudly sponsored by EH Smith Architectural Solutions. The series, Cultured Cousins – The Work of Three Irish Architects, continues with a lecture delivered in person by Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara, co-founders of the internationally acclaimed Grafton Architects.

This is not an exhibition or a talk about their work by someone else, but a rare opportunity to hear directly from the architects as they reflect on their career, design philosophy, and the international impact of their practice. The lecture is open to members, students, and anyone interested in architecture. No prior knowledge of the work is required.

Farrell and McNamara established Grafton Architects in 1978, and their work is defined by a thoughtful use of material, spatial generosity, and a sensitivity to context. Their projects include the Town House at Kingston University, the School of Economics at the University of Toulouse 1 Capitol, and the ESB Headquarters in Dublin. They also curated the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale, where their manifesto 'Freespace' became a defining theme of the exhibition.

In their lecture, Farrell and McNamara will explore key projects and share insights into designing spaces that foster community and interaction, as well as the role of architecture in education and culture. The lecture will last approximately 45 minutes, followed by a question and answer session.

This is an in-person event with step-free access, accessible seating, and facilities for those with sensory or mobility needs.

Guests are warmly invited to continue the evening with the speakers over supper at the Lion & Pheasant, Shrewsbury.
