Design Quest: Civilisation Station

Join us this half term for an online creative architecture workshop for children aged 6 to 10. Explore how from ancient history to the present day, every civilisation has arrived at its own distinct kind of architecture.

About the Workshop

Design Quest: Civilisation Station

Wednesday 28 October 2020 10am to 11:30am

For children aged 6 to 10

From ancient history to the present day, every civilisation has arrived at its own distinct kind of architecture. But why are there different kinds of buildings in different places? Does it depend on the local materials people used, or the ways in which buildings are used across different cultures? What are all these buildings for? Why so many different shapes and forms?

In this workshop we will use drawing and collage to design our own new buildings inspired by the styles and structures of architecture from different places around the world.

Materials

  • Plain white paper – a few sheets for drawing, designing and doodling
  • A piece of card or cardboard for your designs to go onto
  • Collage materials, such as coloured paper, tin foil, old newspapers or magazines
  • A pencil
  • Felt-tip pens
  • A glue stick
  • Scissors
  • A tin of beans
  • A ruler

This creative architecture workshop is led by artist educator Zoe Allen, for children aged 6 to 10 years.

About the workshop series

For ages 6 to 10, our Design Quest workshops inspire younger children to use their imagination and hands-on creativity for a fun introduction to architecture. Previous workshops have seen participants create optical illusions, design sustainable dens, build stage sets, develop an animated story around a public space or assemble a house for a mouse.

The workshop will take place online via Microsoft Teams. A link will be sent to participants with confirmed bookings. This event is suitable for those aged 6 to 10 years old. These workshops are led by professional educators and supervised by RIBA staff. Please see the materials list for items that will be required during the workshop.

If you're under 18, tickets must be booked by a parent or guardian. Online booking in advance is essential: if we do not receive full registration information in advance of the event we cannot allow the participant to attend.
