Design Time: Purposeful Transformations

Join us for our first online creative architecture workshop for children aged 11 to 15. Explore the possibilities of unused office buildings post pandemic using drawing and collage to present architectural ideas.

About the Workshop

Design Time: Purposeful Transformations

Saturday 10 October 2020, 10am to 12.30pm
For children aged 11 to 15

The worldwide pandemic has led to more people working from home and large office buildings in cities left either wholly or partially empty. As working patterns evolve, some experts think that these changes in how office buildings are used may well be permanent. How can we convert these unused spaces in socially beneficial, practical and useful ways? Can we turn them into spaces that foster different ways of living and working in the future?

Rethink: 2025 was a RIBA Journal competition addressing what design changes the world might need post pandemic, with one of the projects, Get Everybody In, focusing on vacant office spaces.

Participants will make at least one annotated drawing inspired by the Rethink: 2025 winner. They will also take part in an a collaborative mapping activity via an online interactive whiteboard and then develop their ideas through individual drawings and collage-making.

About the workshop series

Our Design Time (previously Design Day) workshops for ages 11 to 15 take architectural design a step further by providing context and knowledge of the built environment to spark creativity. Past workshops have focused on different architectural styles, small and large-scale construction methods, traditional and digital drawing techniques, architectural games and using software to design collaboratively in a shared space.

The workshop will take place online via Microsoft Teams. A link will be sent to participants with confirmed bookings. This event is suitable for those aged 11 to 15 years old. These workshops are led by professional educators and supervised by RIBA staff. Please see the materials list for items that will be required during the workshop.

If you're under 18, tickets must be booked by a parent or guardian. Online booking in advance is essential and if we do not receive full registration information in advance of the event we cannot allow the participant to attend.
