Let’s build faster, higher, and stronger together. Join us to celebrate the Olympic Games 2024 through all things architecture at our free family fun day.
Learn about the amazing buildings that make up Olympic villages and house the games and get stuck into architecture related games, challenges, creating, and building.
Try your hand at synchronised sewing, help us build and decorate a spectacular skatepark, team up to build the highest Meccano tower, and bust some shapes at our breakdancing inspired architecture disco.
Please book a place. If you are no longer able to attend please return your ticket, this will help us keep these popular events free of charge.
In partnership with Zaha Hadid Foundation.
Programme of activities
Olympic village
Come along and make an Olympic sports inspired building to add to our ever growing Olympic village. We’ll give you a building idea wildcard and a type of sporting event to choose from to get you started, then - using recycled and craft materials - you’ll design, make, and stand on the podium with your medal-winning build
With designer and educator Katie Kennedy.
Synchronised sewing
Every team needs a mascot. Design and make your own mini mascot in this synchronised sewing workshop with textile artist Lorelle Aboagye.
Sustainable skatepark
Help us build a scaled down skate park. We will need ramps, hand rails, and half pipes to complete our skateboarding arena for our finger skateboarding competitors - that's you. Find out about how this sport - born from the everyday street environment - is still utilising ways to build parks sustainably.
Tag team
No skatepark would be complete without some graffiti. Make a name for yourself with artist and sign writer Adam Makowiecki aka Delicious Signs and design your very own tag to add to the skatepark or take home.
Light the way
The Olympic games can't start without a torch relay to carry the Olympic flame to the opening ceremony! You will design your own Olympic torch inspired by the forms and shapes of buildings by architects who designed venues and stadia for Olympic games, and then use your torch to carry a ‘flame’ to light the RIBA cauldron. With Wilson Yau, artist, educator and Education Officer at Zaha Hadid Foundation.
Eye-ful towers
Team up and see who can build the highest (and most stable) Meccano tower.
Bust a move
2.30pm to 3.30pm
Style out the day and make some shapes in our architecture inspired disco slot to celebrate the new Olympic sport of ‘Breaking’. With special RIBA Learning guests.
Activities may be subject to change on the day.
Please ensure that you accompany your child at all times during the Family Fun Day.
About RIBA Learning
RIBA Learning provides exciting opportunities for everyone to explore, question and celebrate architecture. Our programme is inspired by the work of our members – past and present – and draws on our world-class collection of more than four million items, our exhibitions, and our historic 1930s building at 66 Portland Place, London.
Our creative workshops, courses and activities support learners of all ages and experiences in understanding how the spaces and places in which they live, learn, work and play are designed and built.
By investigating architecture through discussions, designing and making, and using digital media in real-world contexts, our programme encourages learners to think critically and test the boundaries of their creativity.
Architecture matters to all of us and our programme aims to make it accessible to everyone.
