Family Fun Day: Building Personalities

Join us for a fun-filled family day as we explore the stories and messages architects place in the buildings they design and why they do this. Using the architecture of Birmingham’s past and present as inspiration, we’ll learn how to create spaces that talk and tell stories in their own unique way.

Family Fun Day: Building Personalities

Date: Saturday 10 August, 11am to 4pm (last entry 3.30pm)
Location: Foyle Studio & English Studio, Midlands Art Centre, Cannon Hill Park, Edgbaston, B12 9QH

What can you learn about a city or a person from a building’s design? How do architects create spaces that reflect their client’s personality? If buildings could talk, how would they describe themselves?

Join RIBA Learning, in partnership with Birmingham Architects Association, as we explore the stories and messages architects place in the buildings they design and why they do this. Using the architecture of Birmingham’s past and present as inspiration, we’ll learn how to create spaces that talk and tell stories in their own unique way. So drop in throughout the day to colour, design and build spaces that reflect the personalities of the people that use them.

Programme

Please note: all activities are drop in, but you may have to wait for space at individual activities at busy times.

Drawing Futures
What will housing look like in the future? The choice is yours! Using 3D pens you will create an outline of a house of the future. Then take it away, and tell your friends the story of your futuristic house.

Design Me
Buildings can often reflect the personalities of the people they are built for. If you were a building, what do you think you would be like? Would you be old looking, young looking, tall, short, brightly coloured, fancy, well decorated? Be inspired by pictures from the Louis Hellman Archi-Tetes collection and draw yourself as a building!

Baby Builders
With colouring in, building blocks and crawling space, this is the perfect area to introduce your little ones to architecture.

Birmingham Stories
Birmingham is a vibrant city, full of people from all over the world with many stories to tell. Help us throughout the day, as we redesign a small-scale model city of Birmingham so it reflects the characters and stories of its residents. We’ll take you through the design process and, using recyclable materials, help you to build a model of a building that tells your family’s story.

Time Travel Tales
Birmingham has some amazing skylines which tell us about the city’s past and present. Take a look at some of its famous buildings as inspiration, then design your own skyline hat to tell the story of a special place you know.

The Rise of Birmingham
Follow a treasure trail to learn about the story of Birmingham and it’s changing urban landscape.
