On Site - The New Art Gallery Walsall at 25

The Birmingham Architectural Association will come together to host a very special evening event marking 25 years of The New Art Gallery Walsall, a building that continues to stand as one of the region’s most significant cultural landmarks.

Opened to the public in 2000, the gallery rapidly gained recognition not only as a bold architectural statement but also as a vibrant cultural hub. Designed by the Stirling Prize-winning practice Caruso St John Architects, the building has been celebrated internationally for its striking use of form and materials, and nationally for housing one of the country’s finest collections, most notably the world-renowned Garman Ryan Collection. Over the past quarter of a century, the gallery has welcomed countless visitors, artists, and scholars, firmly establishing itself as an enduring icon of contemporary British architecture.

The evening will begin with a guided tour of the building, giving attendees a rare opportunity to appreciate its spaces through an architectural lens. Guests will gain insight into how the interplay of light, texture, and proportion has shaped the experience of art within its walls, and why the gallery remains a reference point for architectural excellence in the UK.

Following the tour, the audience will be invited to an in-depth talk and discussion with two of the gallery’s most influential figures. Peter Jenkinson OBE, the founding director, will reflect on the ambitious cultural vision and civic commitment that made the project possible. He will be joined by architect Peter St John, who will provide an insider’s perspective on the design process and consider the building’s ongoing relevance to architectural practice today.

This anniversary event offers a rare chance to celebrate, reflect upon, and honour a true modern icon of the West Midlands.
